Irkutsk is one of the oldest economic and cultural centres in the Baikal region. It was founded in 1661. From the very foundation it was a centre of trade with China, all Russian-Chinese trade caravans passed through the city.
During the Civil war in the early 20th century Irkutsk was the residence of Admiral Kolchak. Some say that the gold of the Russian emperors conquered by Kolchak now rests in the deeps of Lake Baikal…
