If we take the example of Algebra. Many of us don’t use algebra in real-world scenarios, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t useful. At its heart algebra, the study of unknowns is a tool that you can use to help understand the world better.

If your train is running 10 mins late and you are only 1/3rd the way through your journey, algebra can tell you to let mommy know that you will be 30 mins late for dinner.

Or as America starts adding 11 millions barrels of crude oil daily to the global basket from 0 a few years ago, the prices of crude will fall, to about a third of their highs.

In fact, We recently held a tournament in Mumbai where teams of students (Grades 5–8) were playing producers (of gems, not oil) and had to decide how much to produce to maximize their profit. To do this they had to use the data they had to calculate the buyers' price sensitivity to changes in volume. Then they had to predict what their teammates were going to do in a particular round, and outsmart them.

So you see, Kshitij and his friends are likely to be a part of the 10% that understand and use the power of algebra to understand the world around them.

Children and students will be able to make better decisions and would be able to do a better analysis if they can learn to use the algebra and other concepts of maths in real life.
