Imogene’s Notebook is a warm and supportive home for fiction, flash fiction, and poetry. Thanks for reading and writing with us!

October was a strong month for writers here, and several stories and poems have been chosen as featured works.

We aren't your one-size-fits-all poetry pub. We’re particular about what we publish. For poetry, we like free verse and tend to avoid rhyming poetry and forms — such as haiku, sonnets, etc. We want to feel some emotion and experience all the figurative language — metaphor, simile, personification, all that. If you read through the stories and poems below, you’ll notice each has something unique and special.

Fresh, modern language is what we look for. Make sure your work is revised and edited. With poetry, aim for economy of language, and get rid of dull words if you can — gerunds, articles, prepositions. Play with verb tense. Try present tense instead of past? Think about how verb tense and word choices affect your writing — how the ‘inner voice’ sounds.

In fact, if you read your work aloud — slowly — you’ll catch awkward phrases, repeated words, or stilted language. With poetry and fiction, you must consider the…
