Takeaway Would Have Been Cheaper
A short story
She had deep, clear green eyes. You know them, the kind that could make you think about leaving your wife. She stood there, pen and pad in hand, waiting patiently like she’d seen all this before. Her uniform blouse was crisp and white, fitting well in comfortable blue jeans.
“Careful,” Jack told himself and quickly re-scanned the menu.
“Umm, what did you say the house special was?” he asked, looking up at those eyes.
She rolled hers and repeated, “Homemade meatloaf on a bed of garlic mashed potatoes with a side of peas and carrots.”
Her soft lilting drawl encouraged his belief she was local to Charleston.
Jack looked back down at the menu and hummed, “Nah, I think I’ll have the cheeseburger with fries. Do you have Dr. Pepper?”
She took his menu, “Yes, bottomless, too.”
Brad across the table nearly spit out the water he was drinking. The waitress gave him a wry smile.
As she walked away, Brad exclaimed in a whisper, “Did you see that?!? She so checked your hand to see if you were wearing a ring!”
