“And you believed her?” Chloe shouted.

“She had a good reason.” Mira whispered, eying the suddenly quiet dress store.

“Jaye always does. Something always comes up and you’re stuck waiting….”

“Waiting gives me a chance to catch up on messages.”

“How long did you sit there?” Chloe hissed.

“Not long. Like half an hour.” Mira admired a suede purse.

“Life is too short for ghosts.”

“Jaye’s in a really bad place these days. Her job’s down to only a couple days a week and her roommate is moving out so she has to leave our parent’s apartment. It’s everything all at once.”

Chloe swallowed hard. “That and the anniversary of the accident….How much did you ‘loan’ her this time?”

“I paid off her credit cards, gave her a fresh start.” Mira hung the purse over her arm.

“Your sister will never grow up as long as you keep making excuses. You both lost your parents. Why are you the one who’s always picking up the pieces?”

“Jaye is all the family I have left.” Mira’s voice shook. “I’m all she has.”
