Introducing Collective Intelligence to Impact Investing
Join us on our impact investment journey.
For centuries, we have been living in a world where the most representative self-portrait of ourselves has been depicted as ‘homo economicus’, s/he who pursues self-interest to the greatest extent. While this is not an incorrect description of ourselves, it misses some equally important aspects of us: we care for others, we care for fairness, we heartily pursue just causes, even at the expense of self-interest.
When our team is asked if impact investment makes financial sense, our answer is YES. The answer comes from our DNA as human beings. We are not just programmed to buy cost-efficient products, but also programmed to buy socially conscious and responsible products. We believe that impact-driven companies, when equipped with well-organized community support, can perform better than those purely driven by financial mission. And we truly hope these changes occur with growing magnitude.
Our team aims to support impact-driven companies to maximize their potential, utilizing the collective efforts of the community. As entrepreneurs, we have long been in the community project space and have worked on multiple community collaboration projects. Among them was our previous startup, Viki, where we witnessed grassroots efforts by our volunteer translator community lead to the creation of over 100 million lines of subtitles for international videos with a collective mission to break down language barriers. Beyond Viki, we have seen numerous other great community collaborations, from open source movements to Wiki initiatives across the planet.
This year, we start “Impact Collective,” a radical but enthusiastically-supported initiative which applies the ‘wisdom of the crowd’ to the process of startup investment for the democratization of capital allocation. We believe this will lead to much enhanced diversity as well as greater financial performance. We have adopted this community-driven approach in our startup acceleration process as well. Regardless of where they come from and whether they are investment professionals or not, members of our society ‘collectively’ have the intelligence to tell which companies or projects make better impacts on our society and, ergo, which ones are best-suited to receive investments and community support.
The collective intelligence emerging from our own nature will direct the Impact Collective investment mechanism. We invite you to join us on our journey to making a better world for both people and planet.

저희 팀은 임팩트 추구 기업들이 커뮤니티의 집단적 협력을 활용해 잠재력을 극대화 하도록 돕고자 합니다. 저희 팀의 창업자들은 오랫동안 다양한 커뮤니티 협력 프로젝트 및 비즈니스들을 만들어 왔습니다. 그 중에는 저희의 이전 스타트업인 Viki 도 있습니다. Viki 프로젝트에서 저희는 ‘커뮤니티의 협업으로 언어장벽을 허물자’라는 공동의 비전을 가진 발란티어 번역가 커뮤니티 구성원들이 1억 문장 이상의 자막을 만들어 내는 것을 목격했습니다. 그 밖에도 저희는 오픈소스 운동들에서부터 지구 전역에서 일어나는 위키 이니셔티브들에 이르기까지 수많은 훌륭한 커뮤니티들의 협업을 보아 왔습니다.
올해 저희는 스타트업 투자 과정에 ‘집단 지성’을 적용하여 자본 분배의 민주화에 기여하고자 하는, 급진적이지만 열성적 지지 또한 받고 있는 ‘Impact Collective’ 라는 프로그램을 시작합니다. 저희는 이러한 접근이 벤처 투자의 재무적 수익 뿐만이 아니라 투자의 다양성을 크게 향상시킬 것으로 믿습니다. 이 프로그램은 스타트업 액셀러레이션 과정에도 커뮤니티 기반의 접근 방식을 도입합니다. 어떤 직업을 가졌던, 투자 전문가이던 아니던, 우리 사회의 모든 구성원들은 어떤 회사나 프로젝트들이 사회에 더 나은 영향을 미칠런지, 어느 회사나 프로젝트들이 커뮤니티의 지지나 투자를 받기에 가장 적합할런지를 본능적으로 알아볼 수 있는 집단 지성을 가지고 있습니다.
