The National Association of Home Builders released a report this week from a survey they conducted on individual’s interest or perspective on tiny homes. The study found that more than half of Americans would consider buying a tiny home. A deeper dive in their study revealed that 63% of Millenials compared to 45% of Boomers and 29% of Seniors would be interested in a tiny home.

The Chicon Micro Unit project that I am developing, as board president of Chestnut Neighborhood Revitalization Corporation (CNRC) in East Austin will be to individuals wanting a smaller space that also has shared common areas for things like a large living room, bike racks and bike maintenance and practice space for artists and musicians.

This new data is uplifting. Given that the micro unit concept is relatively new to Austin, the data shows us that there is demand for smaller spaces. The Chicon units will be between 400–650 square feet. With smart design of these small spaces, we will attract all of the demographics the survey found to be interested in the tiny home concept.
