#WI The Question(s)

It started with the millenials at the office asking questions. Then people operations got involved and now everyone from all levels in the company circled up in a room to hear Sara Ines Calderon speak about building an inclusive culture and what it means for business results.

Why Sara? Her business results and methods were unique to the traditional narrative in the tech sector. At musx, she helped build a team of less experienced/very smart individuals (people who just needed the chance but were having trouble getting that chance in a competitive market). Gave them an opportunity to thrive as part of a diverse team and together built a high quality product that’s changing how people share and discover music. Plus her team had fully documented their code(yes, that thing that seems impossible to get coders to do.) Her team was the equivalent of the Oakland A’s, one of the smallest payroll teams in major league baseball but delivering top notch results.

Our event hosts wanted to know the things that firms who believe talent and innovation are critical to their business do: How can they get more top talent and what opportunities are they missing locally? The questions came quickly:

‘Why did you choose to be more inclusive?’

‘What was different about your job descriptions & hiring practices?’

‘How did you recruit?’

‘How do you reach out to community groups in an genuine way when you haven’t been connected before?’

‘What practices got you a more diverse set of applicants?’

‘Did you onboard differently?’

‘What has been your experience of bias training?’

‘What would you recommend for a rapid growth organization like ours?’

In our research, we are seeing more and more companies asking these questions around inclusivity, business results & best practices. If these are questions coming up in your organization now, we’d love to connect and share what we’ve learned.
