The Impact Insurance Academy: looking back on a successful first edition

That’s a wrap! The first Impact Insurance Academy came to a successful conclusion last week. The five-day Academy, which took place at the International Training Center of the ILO in Turin, brought together more than 40 participants, as well as a dozen expert speakers. It represented a unique opportunity to learn how insurance contributes to social and economic development based on the experiences of leading companies.

The Academy combined plenary sessions with specialized elective courses chosen by the participants, covering topics like market research, performance monitoring and claims management. These were brought to life by guest speakers from a variety of insurance organizations, such as MicroEnsure, Stonestep, MCII, AXA, Britam, Microfact, NHIA Ghana and the Access to Insurance Initiative.

The Academy was a truly dynamic learning environment, and participants seized the opportunity to present the work they were doing and receive feedback from experts. Participants’ reactions have been overwhelmingly positive. Below is a selection of some of the feedback we received alongside photos of the Academy in action:

“It was a fantastic opportunity for me and I am glad to have made it here to learn this much. I cannot thank the ILO and the Impact Insurance Facility enough”
“I am sure this is only the beginning of our learning journey. With me personally, this opens door to a whole new world where insurance becomes even more meaningful and impactful. So, thank you!”
“Thank you for supporting private insurers as well as they are key in the change we want to promote”
“It is a great initiative and the sessions were so excellent and helpful”
“I think the Academy is a really great opportunity and I hope that we can explore ways to partner together for even greater impact”
“It was an eye opener for some of us who now have the confidence and zeal to go on and make use of all that we learnt”

Organizing the Academy would not have been possible without the support of our partners: AfricaRe, A2ii, GBG Foundation, Microfact, FSD Africa, AXA, Allianz, the Microinsurance Centre at Milliman, and the International Training Centre of the ILO in Turin, Italy. We would like to thank each of these partners for their invaluable support!

The ILO’s Impact Insurance Facility is celebrating its ten-year anniversary in 2018. Despite a drastically changed environment, some of the products and players that took their first steps with us a decade ago are now well established, others are only just beginning to transform the insurance industry.

Our ten-year blog series explores some of the most important developments in the industry and how our partners are driving them forward.
