Throughout the remarkable year that was 2020, we continued to share interesting stories of colleagues and social finance practitioners in the field. Insurance has the potential to promote economic and social development, and the blogs are a proof of their potential, even amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. A number of stories stood out in 2020; five are highlighted here.

  1. How does an inclusive insurance company deal with the impact of COVID-19? We sat down with Saurabh Sharma from Britam Microinsurance to talk about the situation in Kenya and the plans they are making for the long-term.
  2. Access to finance remains challenging for women in rural India. To address this challenge, the programme “Digital Sakhi” was started in 2016 to enable rural women to create awareness of digital payments options by giving training in their communities.
  3. Kabalikat Para sa Maunlad na Buhay, Inc. (KMBI) is a microfinance NGO based in the Philippines. Since 2019, we have been collaborating with KMBI on an integrated risk management solution project. How has KMBI dealt with and planned for the impacts of COVID-19?
  4. The Philippines went in lockdown in March 2020. In April, we spoke with two savings and credit cooperatives to understand how they are coping with the current situation and the plans that they are making for the long term.
  5. How can we make the insurance industry more inclusive, especially for women? The Argentine Association of Women in Insurance (AMES) is a unique and innovative project that is designed to make a socially inclusive insurance industry and to improve the position of women in Argentina.
