An Introduction to Flannery O’Connor

If we’re lucky, life consists of a series of jumps between wellsprings of motivation and creativity, powered by both internal and external forces. Some people find inspiration in a mentor. Others find a touchstone of inner peace through their religion.

As a young writer, I found Flannery O’Connor.

O’Conner is an American writer best known for the proliferation of short stories and essays she produced during her short life. She lived from 1925–1964. In that time she wrote two novels and thirty-two short stories, as well as numerous personal essays and collections of letters.

Her writing advice and life story provide important inspiration for authors of any generation. She attended Iowa Writers Workshop. She shunned the genre norms of her time and transformed the boundaries of Christain writing. She wrote through the debilitating pain of lupus until the end of her life, producing so much great work that her last collection of short stories was published posthumously.
