A planet centric transformation for Bond Touch

At Impossible, we developed Bond Touch — a pair of wearable bracelets that allow couples, family members or friends to send each other ‘touches’ wherever they are in the world.

We are now using our planet-centric design methodology and tools (read more about it on our Creating a Planet Centric Future article) to scale up its positive impact beyond individual users to the wider community and society.

Besides the ongoing effort of offsetting emissions from the production of the bracelets by investing in the climate protection REDD+ project Kariba in Zimbabwe, we embarked on a journey of transformation to really embed sustainability into the core of our business.

We aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that resonate with Bond Touch and translated them into actionable planetary goals for the business:

Shift to a planet centric value proposition and become civically engaged

We collaboratively defined our new planet centric purpose — to provide support and education in building and maintaining healthy and balanced relationships of any kind; our vision — a world connected by healthier, happier relationships; and our mission — to touch hearts and enrich relationships.

We then ideated around our planetary goals and came up with 21 tangible product, service and civic engagement ideas.

Some of the product and services ideas include a kids companion where, in addition to sending touches, we would use the Bond Touch bracelets with audio books and the possibility of recording bedtime stories where the vibrations and lights would enhance the storytelling and create an immersive listening experience and bond to the narrator.

There are also ideas to enhance relationships and quantify each person’s well-being by providing relationship or emotional health analytics in the form of data visualization or perhaps through an avatar thus providing insights that can be acted upon. This would be based on an open model that caters for different relationship structures and where partners would define the weight that should be assigned to each dimension tracked. Behavioral change can be promoted by pushing tailored challenges and advice.

This idea could be expanded to mental health checks to monitor each other’s mood and well-being and receive guidance on how to support loved ones to cope with specific mental health issues such as depression, low self-esteem, etc. in parallel to the professional support the person in need might be getting.

Within education and awareness, one of our top ideas is to create a Bond Touch Academy. This would be an educational program (at schools and/or independently) for youngsters and their parents that would include talks, workshops or a podcast about healthy relationships, gender inequality and domestic violence, possibly involving special guests.

From an activism aspect, we could create a platform to facilitate and support the formation and development of local Bonditos’ activist groups on gender equality and inclusion and forge new movement leaders.

Naturally, Bond Touch users benefit from their own haptic touch language and this powerful feature could be used within the deafblind community. We would provide specific services including a tactile communication system in order to enhance a different type of communication improving social equality.

We are going to validate, pilot, test, refine and deploy the most promising and impactful ideas.

Improving business & supply chain sustainability

In parallel to rethinking our offering, we looked at improving our operations by assessing the environmental, social and economic sustainability of our value chain against for example transportation & distribution, biocompatibility, socially responsible consumption, equity & justice, macro economic effects, local economy growth and other criteria and by identifying actions for improvement inside and outside of the business.

Completing the assessment led us to the next phase of design. We worked out how to improve inclusion, making sure more people can benefit from our offering, effectively access it, use it and trust it.

We looked at our product lifecycle, including social and environmental impact within the supply chain and planned for a transition to a circular and more sustainable model. Finally, we and planned for our technological operations to be more planet centric and therefore reduce our digital carbon footprint.

Measuring and reporting

Based on all the gathered opportunities for improvement and on our planetary goals, we set objectives and outcomes to be achieved as part of our sustainability strategy, which we will review and track progress every quarter.

In order to do so, we created a roadmap of actionable initiatives meant to achieve those objectives.
