Becoming an Impossible Human

Hello all you beautiful people out there!

I’d like to tell you about an initiative that made me extremely proud to be a part of Impossible.

A few months into my new job, I joined the Impossible Humans team. This internal initiative was created to explore how, as a company and as individuals, we can better serve people and planet.

The aim of this group is to create a safe environment where we can come together as humans within a company and raise awareness of the issues that matter to us. We do this by holding discussions, offering tools and celebrating other’s ideas and achievements.

We created a dedicated Slack channel to share questions and thoughts. We also held a few events on our weekly company-wide Town Hall call.

In early May 2021, we held a workshop with the entire company to brainstorm for topics we should research and discuss as a group. We decided to focus on diversity & inclusion, positive action, workplace struggles, mental health and communication.

This led to an online session on non-binary gender; what it means and how to respect our colleagues that identify as non-binary. It was incredibly informative and created a space where everyone felt comfortable to ask burning questions.

As part of the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, some of our creative team designed an informative flyer that we published on our studio’s Instagram profile.

In July of this year, we decided to tackle the sensitive subject of Imposter Syndrome. We were fortunate to have special guest Gavin Elliott present his story on one of our weekly calls. He helped us identify our “fake it ‘till you make it” thinking, that was affecting some of our team. He shared nine specific symptoms that made it really easy to check how each of us was doing. These included: difficulty accepting praise, discounting your success, overworking, feeling like we need to be the best and be perfect, not showing confidence, feeling like everyone else is doing great, feeling like we don’t do enough and feeling like we’re a fraud. They were feelings many of us have every day no matter what industry we work in. Just knowing they exist is half the battle. For me, it was a huge relief to understand this syndrome so now I can work on making my work-life more balanced.

We received very similar comments from our colleagues around the world so we must be doing something right!

For the rest of this year and 2022 we have some big plans for Impossible Humans to get together, socialize and build stronger relationships within our communities. We are developing plans for beach cleaning, tree planting and learning sign language amongst other initiatives. We have also created a calendar of upcoming internationally celebrated days in the year to raise awareness and kick-start conversations.

Ultimately, we intend to make us all better prepared for embracing and caring for each other and the world we live in.
