Our Impossible Minds series profiles the individuals who are building new possibilities for the future across technology, design and culture. Vinnci is a Design Studio Director at Impossible who has been solving complicated user problems, growing our team in Bay Area and enlarging the business portfolio.

What’s fascinating about your role at Impossible?

I like solving problems that matter and are meaningful. Being in the hybrid role of Studio Director in Bay Area and Creative Project Manager, I am empowered not only to solve the product problems for our clients but also to the strategic challenges for the growth of Impossible’s business and operation.

At times, I have the privilege to be in the decision-making meetings of the client’s product. I can witness, as well as to be part of the good, the bad and the ugly of launching a cutting-edge, complex and (sometimes) straightly regulated product to the global market.

The fascinating part about my job is to be able to live two lives — to be part of the Impossible journey, at the same time be part of the clients’ product team, witnessing how our concepts can potentially turn to something impactful in people’s lives.

What problem are you solving now?

For Impossible, we have a lot of “Impossible” problems to be solved.

One of them is how to run the consultancy business in a meaningful and honest way while making enough money to pay everyone’s salary. We prefer doing business when we have a positive impact on the clients’ projects, which bring a positive impact on society. Value-based care is a hot topic in healthcare. Can we translate it into the consultancy business? Yet, it has to be a profitable and sustainable business. The challenge is how to get the balance. In the end, we are not an NGO. We are B-corp.

Besides “value-based business”, another challenge is transparency in management and operation. What is the most effective level of transparency? On the one hand, we want to share all the information we have and the decisions we are making with everyone in the company. On the other hand, we want to avoid causing unnecessary frustration and confusion induced by information overthrown. Again, it is about how to find the balance.

Being extreme in any direction can never be a good solution.

What are you passionate about?

I am pretty passionate about digging into the root cause of a certain problem and exploring ways to solve it or go around it creatively. The key is not to lose the big picture: what the actual goal is and create a win-win solution for all parties. The interesting part is not just to create the solution, but also to execute it, and to predict and solve the “side-effect problems” along the way. All solutions bring a new set of pain points. This is one main reason why I am very into user experience design and user research, and how to apply it into day-to-day life.

What kind of future do you want?

I want a future that the people who care about the planet and humanity, and commit to making changes, are the majority.

I want a future that there will be no need to produce movies or series to explain: global warming is a thing; burning fossil fuel kills the planet; gender equality and racism are real struggles; homosexuals and transgenders are not less than human; industrial farming and fast fashion create a chain of problems…etc

All these topics should be common knowledge — the same as the Sun rises in the East and sets in the West.

I want a future that the people who are elected to be the global leaders are ensured to be capable to look into the root causes of any issue, consider the planet and humanity as the big picture and have the stigma and ingenuity to find paths to solutions.

What would you say are the biggest challenges to achieve that future?

Flaws of human nature.

It is close to impossible to control everyone’s way of thinking and behavior to be more planet and humanity centric. In the end, we are just humans.

The challenges are to create solutions that can be:

  • economically sustainable, i.e it has business values, so the solution providers do not go out of fund all the time
  • desirable to maintain, meaning people can afford the solution and do not need to go out of their routines to be planet and humanity centric
  • feasible for other providers who care. Otherwise, it turns to a monopolized environment, the solution will not be scalable and improved incrementally.

What’s your favorite thing about working at Impossible?

My favorite thing is spending time with my colleagues.

Nothing is better than being with a group of people who are passionate about the work, curious about the world and generous in sharing the thoughts with each other.
