Advisors and Advice

If you network and attend entrepreneurship events at all, you are bound to meet a lot of smart, confident people, and they’re going to give you a lot of advice. People put in a position to give advice will always give advice. Listen to everyone, take notes, and filter later.

The hardest part of entrepreneurship is knowing what advice to filter out. Many of the people you meet will know less about your particular product, and where it fits in the market than you so their advice may not be the right advice. Here is a good simple filter: Listen most to the advice provided by those who have tried your product, or at least are the intended audience. Listen least to those who simply have money but have not used your product and aren’t the intended audience. Their advice may be distracting.

Seek advice, but only to a point. Decide on what to follow and what to ignore then move on. The best teacher is trial and error.
