May 29th, 2020. Devlin O’Connor, 30, was struck by a driver of a car after being knocked down by another driver who opened their door into his path on Frederick Street between Willard and Arguello.

The street on which Devlin was killed is more than 45 feet wide, with two lanes of car parking, two lanes of vehicle traffic, but no bike lanes. One year ago, Mayor London Breed promised to deliver 20 miles of protected bike lanes within two years. So far, the Mayor has failed to deliver on that goal.

March 8th, 2019. Tess Rothstein, 30, was struck by a driver of a truck at Howard and 6th after a car driver opened their door and knocked Tess into the path of the truck.

The street on which Tess was killed was deemed a High Injury Corridor, yet SFMTA Director Ed Reiskin and Mayor Breed made the decision to not add a protected bike lane to this section of Howard. Their decision contributed to Tess’ death.

Tess Rothstein was a user researcher at Airbnb and Medium. She lived in Berkeley and commuted to San Francisco on bike.

The driver of the vehicle, Farrukh Mushtaq, was driving his BMW SUV at 80 miles per hour—more than 3 times faster than the speed limit—and ran a red light, striking Kate and killing her while she was on her bike. Farrukh Mushtaq did not stop after killing Kate—he continued down the street and was stopped by good samaritans. The street on which Kate was killed was known to the city to be a public safety hazard. Multiple requests for speed limit signs, traffic calming, and a protected bike lane were ignored for at least 3 years by the Mayor’s Office, SFMTA, and Supervisor Jane Kim’s office leading up to the crash. Farrukh Mushtaq was released without serving time in jail for killing Kate.

October 11, 2015. A 47-year-old man named Mark Heryer was killed after being struck by an SFMTA Muni bus on the 500 block of Market Street at 3:23pm. The man was riding the bicycle westbound on Market and according to SFPD “maneuvered out of the sharrow lane to ride between two buses, also moving westbound”. However, follow up SFPD reports presented to the Bicycle Advisory Committee on October 26th suggest Mr. Heryer had not, in fact, attempted to ride between two buses but instead was passing a Muni bus that was moving slowly in the rightmost travel lane. Mr. Heryer was found at fault in the incident despite a lack of evidence that he violated any laws.

The street on which the man was killed has “sharrows” but no protected bike lanes on that block. SFMTA did not suggest any improvements to Market Street following the incident.

Additional facts and notes

In San Francisco, there are 1,088 miles of paved road, but less than 1.5 miles of protected bike lanes.

In 2011 alone, there were 630 non-fatal bicycle injury collisions and 4 fatal bicycle collisions in San Francisco.

The 2011 bicycle injury collision total of 630 was the highest in the past ten years. About a fifth of San Francisco’s injury collisions involve bicycles.

SFMTA dedicates just 0.46% of its capital budget to bicycling. That is despite (and a likely reason for) 3.5% of trips in San Francisco being made on a bicycle.

Because there are so few protected bike lanes in San Francisco, it is a common occurrence for vehicles—particularly trucks—to block bike lanes and force people on bicycles into vehicle traffic. For examples, see this Flickr set. For the Flickr group, see here.

San Francisco police Sergeant Mike Mahoney said the preliminary investigation indicates Moe either did not see the van or thought he could beat it across the roadway.

The van slammed into the bicyclist, and Moe “flew in the air about 15 to 20 feet,” Mahoney said. He landed head first on the curb with his head against a newsstand, according to witnesses, about 30 of whom rushed to the scene after the accident and began frantically calling for help.” Source.
