Karma

I think I might have misunderstood what Karma really is all this while. Since childhood, I was always told about Karma — what goes around comes around. If you do bad, you will experience many bad things. The part where I misunderstood, is its mechanism.

I thought Karma is this magical energy that will bring you goodness if you do good and vice versa. While we can’t prove or disprove that scientifically yet, I’ve noticed the psychological significance behind it.

Years ago, whenever a person did bad things to me, I used to be a person that will hold it against them. But sometimes friends will say, it’s okay let karma do its job. But what does that really mean?

Now I’ve come to this realisation — it means whatever you do to a person or a thing, the effects on them will be secondary, the effects on you, however, will be primary.

If you bully someone, say you hit a boy on his face. His physical hurt is secondary. The primary outcome, you just add a negative personality to your character — a bully.

Ultimately, events in life are not isolated. How you do anything is how you do everything.

A bully will walk like a bully, eat like a bully, work like a bully, drive like a bully. How far do think a bully will go in life?

One day, a friend told me that he wants to become a CEO because he wants to go to work late. Because he’s super not punctual. But the thing is, latecomers usually don’t get to be CEOs.

Because a punctual person will walk like a punctual person, eat like a punctual person, drive like a punctual person, read books like a punctual person, and work like a punctual person. And some of them, do become CEOs.

Because how do you do anything is how you do everything.

Every minute of our lives, we are adding new personalities to our character. And whenever we want to exert a new action, it will be based on the past accumulation of personalities.

It’s like the Indian story of two wolves — A fight is going on inside a boy, it’s a terrible fight between two wolves.

One is evil — he is envy, anger, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, and ego. The other is good — he is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, truth, compassion, and faith.

Which wolf will win? The one you feed.
