Crypto Asia in Review

We are based in Asia, so here are our interesting, recent news bits:

Bitcoin hits $40k and prices of Korean exchanges again highest (read more at Decrypt), followed by US exchanges, and Asian exchanges having the lowest (read more here).

Meanwhile, Suzhou’s CBDC trial sees 96,614 residents awarded red envelopes with the digital currency and about 19 million digital yuan spent. Read more on 8btc). The Block has a video on how it actually looks like here.

Miners are hyped as well: Antminer has already sold out for ‘the next two quarters’. (Read more.) Even the previously outdated Antminer S9 is in demand again with its price doubled these days to more than 200 yuan from a previously 100+ yuan. (Read on).

The South Korean government issued an amendment on January 6 to impose a tax on profits from crypto trading, with a taxation of 20% for anyone earning more than 2.5 million won ($2,300) annually from trading. While for stocks only gains of over 50 million won ($46,000) will be taxed.

To be enacted in February, it would begin levying taxes on cryptos in 2023, according to AsiaTimes.

After a back and forth, it is now official: DBS, the largest bank in Southeast Asia, has officially announced the launch of several crypto services, including a crypto exchange, supporting four fiat currencies and four cryptocurrencies. (More here on Bitcoin.com)

Not only prices but also searches for Bitcoin on Chinese search giant, Baidu, peaked at all-time highs as well.
