Engineering management requires diverse skills: mentorship, project management, budgeting, recruiting, technical design, and etc. One of the best ways to improve skills is to learn from other engineering leaders’ experiences. I selected three great resources where you can directly listen to their experiences.

ELC (Engineering Leadership Community)

https://sfelc.com/

ELC provides a safe space for engineering leaders to connect and learn. We value authenticity, sharing, and thoughtfulness. Our mission is to connect the world’s engineering leaders and help evolve how leadership is implemented in the tech industry.

ELC began as SFELC (San Francisco Engineering Leadership Community), and it expanded to more cities. In fact, the website includes incredibly useful videos and podcasts for free of charge. Here are my favorite resources:

ELC holds an annual conference, ELC Summit, and the speakers cover various topics and it is also a great opportunity to interact with other managers. (The 2020 conference went virtual due to the COVID-19.)

We help engineering leaders develop soft skills and build better teams through mentorship.
Sometimes being a manager can feel like an island, and it’s helpful to talk to someone who’s been there. We’ve curated the world’s best technical leaders.

Plato helps managers connect to mentors, and you will have opportunities to meet leaders with great experiences. Currently (December 2020), the membership costs $249 per month (when paid annually), but Plato also offers ample free resources such as stories and videos.
