Working out together builds strong bodies and a strong relationship.

Couples Who Sweat Together Stay Together!

Such a great quote. You hear and read it all the time but what are the reasons for this?

IT INCREASES YOUR EMOTIONAL BOND TO EACH OTHER

  1. Body language is a communication tool. When working out, you are mimicking each other’s body language and non verbal cues, which increases your feeling of being emotionally attuned to each other.

IT BRINGS SHARED ACHIEVEMENTS

2. Gains and successes in the gym will be shared and celebrated. You will be proud of each other. Fitness goals that have been worked hard for will be appreciated by your other half. They know how hard you worked to achieve it! This brings you closer together.

YOU WILL POSITIVELY INFLUENCE EACH OTHER

3. You positively influence each other. It’s easier to remain accountable for your fitness routine when you are on the journey together. Your partner knows you so won’t buy lame excuses to avoid a workout, or let bad habits slip in! This reduces the chance you will fall off the fitness wagon.

YOU WILL HAVE FUN TOGETHER

4. Banter and teasing around who lifted more, ran faster, did more burpees is a welcome and shared escape from life stressors such as work and bills. You are more likely to try new and active things together, for example climbing, kayaking. Trying new activities promotes the production of dopamine in the brain, a chemical which enhances a feeling of positivity. This feeling will be associated with each other.

YOU LEARN TO WORK TOGETHER AS A TEAM

5. A common goal is focused upon, which helps build good behaviour patterns in the relationship. Both of you are aware the fitness routine is important to each other, and to the relationship itself.

YOU ARE HAPPIER TOGETHER

6. Having a shared fitness routine increases happiness and satisfaction within the relationship. You will feel more supported by your other half. Exercise releases endorphins which will increase your happiness as an individual. Working out together enables you to share that experience, thus creating a happier relationship.

YOU GROW STRONGER AS A COUPLE

7. You grow stronger together. You see how hard each other works works, how you are able to push through a brutal workout, how strong you are. This builds belief and trust in each other’s capabilities.

YOUR RELATIONSHIP IS MORE ROMANTIC

8. Exercise induces sweating, racing pulse and breathlessness. These symptoms induce romantic and physical attraction to each other.

YOU ARE MORE ENCOURAGING OF EACH OTHER

9. You motivate and encourage each other. The idea of being “in it together” increases the effort put into the workout itself and with maintaining fitness as part of your lifestyle.

YOU BUILD A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE TOGETHER

10. You build a healthier lifestyle together. Working out together encourages you to make healthier lifestyle choices and commit to it for the long term.

MY EXPERIENCE

My soon to be husband and I workout together. I introduced him to fitness. He was so in awe of my capability of running about 1km!!! We went out “up the glen” (the local country park) early on in our relationship. I was fairly near the start of my fitness journey at the time. It was a 5km trail and I would run the middle section.

He tried and didn’t manage to run far. I think he ran more than he had in 20 odd years to be fair!

He was so impressed with my ability to run a solid 1km. I felt like Usain Bolt!! I was so used to being the beginner everywhere that his adulation boosted my confidence and made me realise how far I’d come.

Long story short. His praise motivated me. My ability motivated him. That was the start of our “couples who workout together stay together” journey. And we’ve not looked back. From a pair of smokers in awe of a 1km run to being regulars at CrossFit, not smoking and eating healthy (apart from those pink meringues from Morrisons!!!).

I’m not so sure we would have achieved so much if we had done it alone.
