Sometime last year while I was talking to someone, water got brought up. I’ll never forget what this person said to me about water. Do you know when someone says something so incredibly stupid that it just sticks with you forever?

“I’ve never been a big water person.”

Excuse me? All I wanted to say to this person was, you’re not a water person? Humans are made up of about 70% of water; WE’RE ALL WATER PEOPLE!

Drinking water has so many benefits for the human body. The list is so long that I won’t cover all of them in this article, but here are four solid reasons why drinking enough water is crucial. Next time you run into a “non-water” person, make sure to shove these in their dehydrated face.

It’s a great cleanser for the body

Simply drinking a glass of water greatly aids in digestion by preventing constipation, helping to keep us regular. Moreover, it promotes our body’s ability to flush harmful bacteria and toxins out through urine. This is especially the case when you drink it in the morning on an empty stomach, which brings us to the second reason.

It’s a healthy way to start your day

Getting water into your body before anything else has multiple benefits in kick-starting your day. It boosts your metabolism and helps your body produce muscle and blood cells. Furthermore, hydrating immediately after getting up will wake you up more efficiently compared to coffee. Don’t get me wrong, I love my morning coffee, but since coffee dehydrates the body, it’s important to drink water beforehand to combat dehydration and wake up in a healthier way. After you’re hydrated, then go nuts on the coffee.

It’s also great to have water on an empty stomach due to its ability to alleviate heartburn and indigestion. Not yet sold on the power of water? Don’t sweat (you’ll get dehydrated), because I have two more reasons.

It compliments a strong immune system

No one likes getting sick. Fortunately, water can reduce the likelihood of this happening. Our blood carries rich nutrients that depend on our water consumption to effectively support our immune system. Drinking water also helps balance the lymphatic system, increasing our immunity and thus our body’s ability to fight off harmful substances.

It improves our appearance

Really? Water can make me look sexy? Well, I don’t know if it will for sure, but it can lead to healthier-looking skin and radiant hair. Regularly drinking water reduces the likelihood of developing wrinkles, promoting skin that looks more youthful. Plus, since water can rid our body of toxins, regular consumption will leave your skin looking luminous.

As far as hair goes, dehydration is associated with thinner, brittle hair. Ensuring you’re drinking enough water will help your hair look and feel rich.

So how much water is ideal? The amount varies, but Dr. Julian Seifter, a kidney specialist and associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, appropriately addresses this concern:

“If you’re wondering how much water you should drink on those occasions, speak with your doctor, but a general rule of thumb for healthy people is to drink two to three cups of water per hour, or more if you’re sweating heavily.”

If you know someone who isn’t a big “water person,” or if you haven’t been drinking enough of it, remember these easily attainable benefits that will come simply from drinking more water. You should also look up other health benefits of the colourless gem, because there are so many more.
