When it comes to fat loss and maintaining a healthy weight, alcohol can often be an unexpected roadblock. Many people don’t realize how drinking affects their energy, appetite, and body composition.

With the holiday season on the horizon, here are four sneaky ways alcohol can cause you to gain weight and how to navigate these challenges.

1. Sneaky Serving Sizes

“But I’ve only had “one” drink!”

One of the easiest ways to overconsume alcohol is by losing track of actual serving sizes. For example, a standard serving of wine is 5 ounces, but many wine glasses hold much more than that. Pouring wine into large glasses can easily turn a “single glass” into two or even three servings without you realizing it.

Similarly, if you're at a party and drinking out of those deceptively large red Solo cups you can't see through, a drink might end up being more than a standard serving size of beer or cocktails.

To help control your alcohol intake, use smaller glasses or measure out actual servings of your drinks. Remember that every ounce adds up, and it’s easy to drink more calories than you intend.
