4 Workout Excuses That Need to Go
Excuses piss me off.
Mostly because people resort to using them because they’re scared. They know what they want. They talk about it constantly. But when it’s time to take action, they clam up. If you make excuses all the time, then you will never accomplish what you set out to do. Not only will your health and fitness suffer, but so will your life.
Kill off these excuses to progress and level up.
I’ll Start Tomorrow
It’s always tomorrow, isn’t it?
This is crap.
Life happens right now. Today. Why sacrifice the opportunity to get better, today, waiting for a tomorrow that may never come.
Find the time to get the work done, now. If not, you start building the habit of procrastination. Everything in your life will be put off until tomorrow. And then when tomorrow arrives, you’ll push it off until the following day.
Subscribe to the “now” mentality. Do you have to work out? Go now. Do burpees now. Go for a run or a cycle, now. Go for a swim, right now.
Doing this, and operating in this manner will become a habit and your life will only improve as a result. You’ll make that sales call, now. You’ll get your car fixed, now. You’ll repair the screendoor, now.
You’ll then develop the habit of doing. Not procrastinating.
Lack of Time
If I hear this excuse again I’m pretty sure I’ll kick a puppy.
And I love puppies, but I hate this saying more than I love dogs.
Lack of time? No. You have plenty of time.
If you have the time to binge-watch Netflix and Disney Plus, then you have time to train. There are so many people out there right now telling me they don’t have the time and are tweeting about The Mandalorian episode that dropped.
People, it’s a pandemic. So many places are shut down. You can’t go to the movies, bars, or clubs. You have more time now than ever as a result of covid.
You can watch your Netflix (I do too), but you can also do some stretches, pushups, or lunges in place while you watch.
This excuse needs to go.
Lack of Equipment/Proper Gear
No gym access? No barbells or dumbbells? No treadmills? No freaking problem.
Do you have a floor? Great. Drop down and do pushups. 17 pushups on the minute, every minute for 30 minutes is 510 pushups. No gym needed.
Can you get outside and locate a road? Great. Throw running shoes on and go for a run.
You don’t need the right shorts or shirt. You don’t need a heart rate monitor or a proper playlist. These are lies posing as truth from the quitting mind.
What you “need” to do is take action and get to work.
So what if you don’t have a gym. Make the world your gym. Outside is always open. It doesn’t have holiday hours.
The other day, I couldn’t get to the gym because it was closed for Thanksgiving. I went outside and found a tree branch. I did 100 pull-ups outside on that branch in less than 10 minutes. I’m not saying this to brag. I’m telling you this to show you your self-imposed limits.
We think we need the proper conditions to train, but the only “proper thing” is getting the work done.
And come on. It’s not like gyms are mermaids or centaurs. They exist and they’re all around. There’s a gym on every corner. We are bombarded by health and fitness tips, workouts, and diets at every turn.
And if gyms are still closed for you — or will close again because of covid — order adjustable dumbbells, a barbell, or resistance bands off of Amazon or OfferUp.
If you desire to get a heart rate monitor, new shoes, or training equipment, great! But don’t sacrifice workouts until you acquire those items.
They are luxuries, not essentials. The work is essential.
It Doesn’t Come Naturally to Me
My friends, nothing in life comes naturally. It is learned.
Tying your shoes didn’t come naturally at first. You learned. Now when you do it, I’m sure you can hold a conversation with someone and not even think about the steps needed to tie your shoes.
There are so many other skills you’ve learned that didn’t seem natural at first like eating with a fork, riding a bicycle, and driving a car.
These activities are second nature now because of repetition. You practiced it. Essentially, you trained.
Sure, I understand that we may have natural talents in some areas, but that doesn’t mean you can’t learn skills that you aren’t naturally inclined to.
I am not a natural writer. But, I’m studying the craft and practicing. I’m training this skill every day. As a result, I’m improving.
So what if you’re a “beginner.” Arnold was a beginner once. So was Kobe Bryant. They kept at it. They kept putting the time in, doing rep after rep until they became great.
That’s not talent. It’s a choice.
I understand that we are still in the middle of a pandemic, however, this isn’t an issue when it comes to your fitness goals.
Most of us don’t lack resources, just a lack of resourcefulness.
This is a beautiful opportunity to step outside of our normal routines and shake things up.
Go to a park and do pull-ups on the monkey bars. Run sprints at a local football field. Find old tires and get sledgehammers at Home Depot and make a workout out of it.
The possibilities are endless. So I don’t want to hear these excuses anymore:
- I’ll start tomorrow = Start now.
- Lack of time = Lie.
- Lack of equipment/gear = Lack of resourcefulness.
- It doesn’t come naturally to me = Scared cop-out.
Excuses are great if you want to waste time and hold your potential back. They’re great for keeping your goals out of reach too. If you desire an unfulfilled life? Keep making excuses.
