When physical and mental endurance battle for your attention

A sport that keeps you on your feet

With the road for company

Logging mile after mile

Covering distances

Following paces

Going places

Aiming for the finish line

Running shoes swapped for a pen

Pavement exchanged for paper

A blank page to write your story

Instead of run it

Let your mind take you places

Create characters to meet

In lieu of fellow athletes

Let their many traits

Replace the run routes

The end goal the same

To reach the final page

A marathon effort

Isn’t running like writing?

Focus and concentration, one word-step at a time

Isn’t writing like running?

Fortitude and patience to complete the distance

Both activities of endurance

Six months of training for a twenty-six mile race

More than a year of writing

For a book that sets the pace

Hoping the world notices the strong athlete you are

Hoping readers appreciate the writer that you are

While hope and expectation may be fulfilled, or not

It is ultimately a sense of self

Training and competing to the best of your abilities

Putting words down on paper the finest way you can

A run charges up the brain

Flooded with ideas of all the wonderful things to write

While writing, the road awaits

For all the wondrous adventures to take you on

Caught between staying still and moving

Both equally joyous

Strength of body and mind

A time for everything

When you love more than one thing

So different, yet so similar
