Cleanse Yourself of Food Sins
Food can be a double edged sword
Food Is Double Edged
Clyde suffers from depression and eats 4,000 calories a day without exercising. He spends four hours a day cooking, and he ends the day at the local diner where he usually bashes the waiter for his food being imperfect.
Clyde’s relationship with food is clearly unhealthy. Food is not inherently negative, but it can be a double edged sword in the wrong hands.
When utilized properly, food can be many great things:
- Food can be nutritional and beneficial for your health.
- It can provide the needed fuel to conquer your goals.
- Tasty food can bring a great deal of joy.
- It can boost social gatherings.
- Knowing how to cook can help save money.
- Cooking skills can also lead to a career.
However, the four sins of overeating, time consumption, social misconduct, and emotional eating can turn food into your number one obstacle.
The Four Sins
Overindulging in food can be unhealthy
You probably know that being on a caloric surplus is a surefire way to put on some pounds. What you may constantly overlook, however, is that healthy food is not an excuse to overeat.
You can be on a diet of purely veggies and still have health problems due to overeating. That can be done by eating far more calories than what you burn.
Besides obesity causing health problems, obesity does not usually make you look good either.
Some spend too much time cooking
Sure, it is okay if, every now and then, you make a dish so involved that it requires overnight refrigeration. At least that can happen while you sleep. However, if you spend hours a day making or even talking about food, you could be missing out on the more substantial aspects of life.
World renowned chef, Gordon Ramsay, has shown that delicious dishes can take as little as 10 minutes to prepare. He is a professional, of course, so you might end up spending double the time on the same dish, which is still not bad.
While cooking, you can rest your eyes from looking at a screen all day while catching up with your favorite podcast or listening to a trending audiobook. You can even cook in silence, almost meditatively.
Some bash others for imperfect food
There is plenty of social misconduct by people being irrational about food.
Waiters are sometimes mistreated for relatively innocent mistakes. Waiting has to be one of the most difficult jobs. Many waiters and waitresses do it while juggling with many other things. It is a popular job for college students who already have a lot on their plates (pun unintended).
You have every right to receive your dish like you ordered it, but you can also state your concerns with a touch of etiquette that can go a long way.
Food could be a coverup for your shortcomings
The School of Life has a fantastic video about how some people use food to cope with underlying issues. For example, instead of facing your crumbling marriage, you opt for a large bucket of salty fries.
The video is brief yet impactful and potentially lifechanging, so don’t miss it!
Your Rehabilitation Program
Food is a necessity for all of us, so consider optimizing it this way:
- Stick to your healthy diet, but make sure you are only on a caloric surplus if you are doing it deliberately to gain muscle, for instance.
- Unless your livelihood depends on cooking, find ways to cook faster to free up your time for more worthwhile activities.
- Do not let food shape up your social interactions. Instead, help it boost your already great social life.
- Eat good food to make you feel better, but do not let it distract you from bringing underlying issues to the surface.
