If the thought of eating a french fry makes you want to gag at the impurity of it all, this article isn’t for you. I’ve been trolled for saying it’s okay to eat candy, you can lose weight eating carbs, and six-pack abs aren’t all that healthy.

I’m far from perfect. Most weeks, my family eats processed meals from the frozen section of the grocery store and fast food once or twice (sometimes more). The clean eaters of the world likely think that means I’m unqualified to give health and fitness advice. If that’s you, I get it.

Hear me out, though. I’m 44 years old and navigating the ins and outs of raising two active kids with a husband who travels weekly. Weeknights are spent driving to tutoring, dance, and guitar lessons. I’m also balancing the demands of working and growing a freelance career.

I’m just as harried, stressed, and exhausted as the clients I coach. I would love to say I eat a steady diet of kale smoothies and fresh salads. I can’t. Yet, despite all the things I don’t get 100 percent right, I stay fit. I’ll never promise that because something works for me, it will work for you. But here’s a look at how I manage.

What I get mostly right with food
