Training with sandbags is definitely not conventional and is often overlooked by many. No matter how long you’ve been going to the gym, it can never prepare you for a sandbag workout. It requires a whole new level of fitness to execute, which the average gym-goer just doesn’t have.

Why Sandbags?

Training with sandbags calls for stabilization strength. The ability of your core and other muscles to stabilize weight is an important part of being fit. Usually, this isn’t very difficult because the weight that is used in gyms is stable. If you grab a barbell in the middle it weighs 45 pounds and it’s static; it doesn’t move. However, sandbags have an inherent instability to them, making them a dynamic weight. Ten pounds of sand is going to feel like 20 pounds of iron and 50 pounds will feel like 100 pounds. The sand shifting back and forth in the bag as you move will require your muscles to stabilize the load in a way they aren’t used to. Increasing our stabilization strength will result in increased core strength which we know is good for longevity and can help combat lower back pain. Being fit is not just about feeling good, but it’s also about minimizing the risk of injury.
