The #1 indicator of long-term health is our VO2 Max.

This is the maximum rate of oxygen our bodies can use during exercise, an important metric for cardiovascular health and longevity. The higher ours is, the more independent we can be as we grow older.

Though aging inevitably lowers our VO2 Max, training to have the highest possible value at every age ensures we always stay over the functional independence limit, the minimum VO2 Max capacity seniors need to live life autonomously.

And isn’t a healthy, independent old age what we all desire?

Well, at least that’s what I want for myself.

That’s why one of my 2024 goals has been to improve my heart health. Though I’ve had an active lifestyle for years (I usually resistance train 3 times per week, walk 10–20k steps daily, and occasionally dance or hike), I’ve shied away from intense cardio like it’s a plague.

Why?

I just don’t like it.
