Stand up paddle boarding is often seen as a fun activity to do on vacation. The big board is stable enough where you don’t need much balance so first timers won’t have any trouble getting the hang of it. You can paddle along a river, lake, or ocean and enjoy the views.

I have paddle boarded several times while on vacation and have always enjoyed it but never did it as a workout, I would do it just for fun. I would always casually paddle and look around at the scenery.

It wasn’t until a couple of months ago that a professional runner I follow on Instagram began posting about stand up paddle boarding. She was doing it as a form of cross training after she recently developed a stress fracture. I had never seen that before, most runners will swim, aqua jog, bike, or elliptical as their cross training.

I remember thinking when I first noticed her posting about it, “How is that even a workout? You aren’t moving your legs.”

I started doing some research to investigate it because this was an Olympic runner, it must be worth it.

To my surprise, it actually is a great workout. Here are six health benefits to SUP.

1. It burns a lot of calories
