Cycling, especially cycling outdoors, is beneficial for the mind and body. Who doesn’t enjoy inhaling fresh air and seeing green trees, and a brilliant blue sky whizzing by overhead?

Unfortunately, the weather doesn’t always cooperate with our best-laid cycling plans. On days when the weather is bad, you might be better served by taking your cycling workout indoors.

When there’s lightening overhead or ice on the roads, it’s nice to know there’s a stationary bike in a safe, warm part of the house and it’s ready to rumble.

Before hopping on a stationary bike, you first must have one to jump on! If you’re shopping for one, you have two choices: a recumbent bike or an upright bike.

Let’s look at the pros and cons of each type of stationary bike, so you can decide which is best for you and your cycling needs.

How an Upright and a Recumbent Bike Differ

As the name implies, an upright bike places your body in an erect position when you pedal. The pedals are positioned directly below your body and when you pedal, your legs extend toward the ground.
