The iconic athlete, Carl Lewis, exploded off the starting blocks at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Carl had a goal to match Jesse Owens’ record. He had a convincing win in the 100-metres, won the long jump with relative ease, and won his third gold medal in the 200-metres with a time of 19.80 seconds — a new Olympic record.

Anchoring the last leg of the 4 × 100-metres, he won gold for the USA, breaking the tape in 37.83 seconds, setting a new world record.

Certain sports require the right genes

Sprinters need fast muscles, and Carl inherited fast muscles from his parents. His mother was a hurdler, who, along with her husband, ran a local athletics club. Carl’s dad coached athletes to elite status.

As a child, Carl lacked height. They had no hope of little Carl making his mark in athletics. If you are short, you can train seven days a week, but you will not win a high jump competition.
