It doesn’t need to be a sacrifice or even a challenge if you know just how to prioritize it.
Why should I prioritize my health?
Because you need to. Being healthy means transforming your body and mind into its strongest form possible. In the short-term and long-term, prioritizing your health helps protect you from illness, weakness, and whatever else life throws at you. Being healthy is your ticket to as high a quality of life as possible.
Top 5 priorities for your health
1. Get enough sleep
Sure, those late-night movies are tempting, and the cat always wants to be fed a 5:00 AM making quality shut-eye scarce. However, getting enough sleep is crucial for many body processes, including recall and memory in the brain, lower blood pressure, and stronger immunity. To enjoy these benefits and more, try to aim for 7–8 hours of sleep.
2. Go for wholesome food choices
Takeout happens every once in a while. As often as you can, go for wholesome and natural food sources. Instead of eating preserved vegetables or canned equivalents, go for the real things. Skip processed bread. The same goes for pasta and sweets.
The more natural you get with your food choices, the better your body responds to them. Many notice that they simply feel “better” when they heat wholesome foods rather than packaged ones. Their body can put them to work easier, too!
3. Skip the multivitamin and go directly to what you need
Most of us grew up eating multivitamins, but they often aren’t nearly as helpful as we’ve been led to believe. Why? Because our nutritional deficits are often specific to us as individuals. A “one size fits all” multivitamin won’t help us get the nutrition we need.
Go for specific dietary supplements instead. For instance, consider taking collagen protein if you know you lack protein. If you are struggling with lactose intolerance, supplement your diet with a fishbone calcium supplement. Hate eating greens? Go for a super greens supplement, etc. A focused approach to your nutrition is the best way to help “fill the gaps” in your diet instead of simply “padding” where you don’t need it.
4. Protect those teeth
Those pearly whites work hard to break down and process food as we eat. Your mouth is the gateway to the rest of your body, so you’ll need to prioritize oral hygiene to help you stay in your best health. So, floss, brush, and use mouthwash at least twice a day! If you want to dedicate some attention to plaque and build-up between dentist appointments, you can use Manuka honey to do just that. Hate the menthol in mouthwash? Try a salt rinse instead!
5. Give your eyes a rest
From computers to smartphones to squinting in the sunshine (because you forgot your sunglasses again), your eyes take a lot of strain. Make sure that you give them a break and treat them right to keep them healthy, too. Add in some drops for lubrication, and consider an astaxanthin supplement to help treat eye fatigue and eye strain.
