As a kid, my dad was always piling my brother and me in the car and taking us out to explore the woods. We called them “surprise walks” because we never knew where he would take us.

We’d hike for a few hours and end up at a spooky old house, a dark cave, or a run-down barn that we would explore. It was my first introduction to the outdoors, and I loved it.

I picked up mountain biking in my late teens and spent the next several years exploring the outdoors differently. My friends and I traveled all over the midwest, finding the joy of companionship and adventure on our bikes.

Then in my twenties, I met that special someone, and we decided to do the adult thing and settle down. Five years, two kids, and thirty pounds later, we realized the closest we had gotten to nature was mowing the lawn or grilling on the deck.

We had spent so much time keeping up with the Joneses that we’d neglected something we both loved deeply — time in the outdoors.
