You might wonder how to ground yourself and return to a balanced mind. Grounding yourself is helpful in many ways, whether you struggle with anxiety or want a more fulfilling life. Read on for useful tips on grounding yourself and regaining balance in your life.

What is grounding?

Grounding, which is sometimes known as earthing. It is the practice of reconnecting with the earth — and thereby, our own bodies and health. When we’re ‘grounded,’ we feel more connected to the natural rhythms of life — like the ebb and flow of the seasons and the cyclical movement of the tides.

When we’re grounded, our stress response can be activated appropriately and released from our bodies at a much more natural and healthy rate.

Breathing

Breathing is one of the first grounding practices that many people turn to. This is because breathing is something that we can do anywhere, anytime. When first learning to control our breathing, it can be helpful to use a prompt such as “inhale calm, exhale stress”. This can help us focus on bringing our attention fully to each breath and each part of the breath cycle — so that we feel the full effect of each breath.

Contemplation

So, one of the most straightforward grounding practices is to take time to notice the natural world around you — and even to touch it. When we’re indoors, we can look at how light falls on the walls, textures, and objects. We can also notice the sounds of different sounds around us — and take them in and appreciate them for their unique qualities.

Meditation

Many grounding practices are designed to help us tap into the natural rhythms of life and to feel the connection between our bodies and the world around us. One of the most effective ways to do this is to try meditation. When you’re first learning to meditate, it can help to set a timer for 10–15 minutes. You don’t need to keep looking at the clock. But as you get more used to the practice, you can try to meditate without setting any timer. In the Sensera app, you can find many useful meditations and exercises to help you focus on the present moment.

Creativity/ art/ music

When you’re involved in a creative activity, your mind naturally wants to focus on what you’re doing and the creative process, and it wants to let go of thoughts that might otherwise tug at it or distract it. You can also let go of the need to produce something “perfect” or “right” or to meet some expectations. Instead, you can focus on creating something that feels real. It comes from the heart and is your own — even if it’s not 100% perfect.

Conclusion

When we don’t ground ourselves, we risk losing touch with our true selves and the natural world around us. But there are many easy ways to get back on track and feel more connected to the people and places around you. Grounding yourself regularly is one of the simplest ways to become happier and healthier in every area of your life.
