What I Learned from A Grueling 42km Bike Ride

Because waiting for the perfect opportunity could take forever

I saw a picture on Instagram of a Norwegian influencer spending time in Hvaler, an archipelago 30 minutes south of where I live (by car). It thrilled me to learn that there’s a tourist destination close to where I live.

Since it’s so close and I’m always up for a physical challenge, I decided to get there by bike. It was 42 km both ways and could take as long as four hours, manageable enough for me. I’d ride around town to see what else the place offered.

The plan sounded simple enough, right?

The perfect opportunity is not necessary

It has been almost a year since I planned this activity.

Fast forward to August 14, 2024, and I still haven’t done what I set out to do. There were always reasons not to go: It’s too cold, it’s raining, I’m not sure my bike is up to the task, I didn’t have cycling shorts, etc. But we were only five days away from the start of school, and this could be my best chance to accomplish a goal I set for myself.
