What Is Intermittent Fasting?
Is it a health revolution or just another fad?
Intermittent fasting as a method of weight loss has gained a lot of momentum in the last couple of years with celebrities such as Jennifer Aniston, Halle Berry, and Hugh Jackman all hailing the concept as an amazing addition to their health and well-being regime.
This method of weight loss consists of various eating windows such as the 16:8 method, meaning that you fast for 16 hours in a 24 hour period and eat only inside the 8-hour slot allowed. You don’t have to work out your window with a complicated online calculator, you can pick whatever schedule suits you best. Everyone is different so there is no right or wrong.
So why is there so much conflict between health and fitness professionals?
I first heard the term “intermittent fasting” a few years ago and initially I was confused. Hadn’t I and everybody else on the planet been taking part in this revolutionary method since birth? People usually go to sleep for around 8 hours per night, wake up and eat.
BREAK-FAST it’s literally in the name.
Sometimes people don’t feel hungry in the morning and so they wait until lunch, therefore increasing their fasting window by around 3–4 hours. Now somewhere along the way it has been said that the longer you fast, the better it is for your body.
I can see the logic behind this claim, though I’m not totally convinced. The theory is that intermittent fasting can promote blood sugar control, growth hormone secretion, fight inflammation, and aid in weight loss. The problem is that If you read a lot of research studies I’m pretty sure you’ll find an even number for and against. Data can always be manipulated to serve an agenda.
In 2020 Dr. Jason Fung, a researcher, and author released the book ‘life in the fasting lane’ and it was a hit. Claiming that intermittent fasting is emerging as one of the most exciting medical advancements in recent memory, he and his books are widely recognized as the voice of the future when it comes to health and well-being.
I do have to wonder if Mr. Fung is simply the latest in a long line of charlatans who have stumbled upon a way of fooling the general public into believing that the reason they have failed to lose weight is that they don’t practice his particular method.
Intermittent can be a fantastic tool for restricted calorie consumption. If your daily allowance of calories is 2,500 you would be hard-pressed to consume those calories in an 8-hour window unless you were eating high carb, high fat, high sugar foods.
If you eat sensibly and include high protein, satiating meals to your diet then the outcome will most likely be a calorie deficit which is all that is needed for the majority of the population.
Move more, eat fewer calories, and set realistic timeframes for your weight-loss. Intermittent fasting will certainly help with the process of fat loss and will more than likely encourage you to focus on what you consume within your eating window, but It Isn’t a magic fix that makes your body do incredible things with your hormones, insulin, or hunger hormones to melt fat away.
Education, awareness and a simplistic approach to weight loss will, in my opinion, always bear more fruit when it comes to viability and adherence. The more falsely complicated health and fitness becomes, the more the general public will suffer.
