Most of us fitness junkies have a solid workout routine that has proven to be effective. You may think that your workout is bulletproof because you got it from a trusted source or saw its result on your own health.

But, the results will slow down if you don’t make the right adjustments.

According to scientific studies, periodization is paramount to enhancing performance due to what is known as anabolic resistance. Anabolic resistance happens when our body adapts to exercise, making our muscles resistant to change and hit a plateau.

In approximately 12 weeks, our brain learns our workout routine by heart. Meaning, after every 12 weeks, it becomes harder to progress, be it cardio, weight lifting, or resistance training even if we lift heavier and harder.

So, every 3–4 months, we need to switch up our training routine and always alternate the exercises we perform to trick our brain to facilitate progress.

There are different muscle splits or training routines that we can choose from:

  • 1–2 muscle a day or the “bro split” (5–6 days/week);
  • 1 group of muscle a day: push, pull, legs (6 days/week);
  • Upper and lower body split (4 days/week);
