Your Attention Span is Under Attack: Here is What to do About it

One of the biggest factors that negatively affects our well-being in the modern world is that we have constant access to easy but meaningless forms of pleasure. The problem with always being “rewarded” with things like social media, gatcha games, junk food, etc. is that it gives us a false sense of what is normal. When we are constantly being rewarded for tasks that don't require any effort, it raises the bar on the difficulty of doing hard things and can even make our normal lives feel harder and more monotonous. Importantly, a linchpin in all of this is our attention span since this is what is being hijacked but is also the key to escaping the “dopamine trap” of instant gratification.

When I was in high school, I signed up for an online course during my junior year. It was held in the computer lab and I usually had some leisure time before I needed to begin. I remember that I often perused a popular World of Warcraft blog and read long articles about the game. Fast forward to the present day, and I think it’s actually MORE difficult to engage with medium- or long-form written media such as this. Why? Other media formats such as Youtube videos provide faster gratification and information download, which has unfortunately…
