Bubbly — Champagne For Breakfast
How much alcohol is too much?
I was sitting in an outdoor café, having breakfast and enjoying the balmy temperatures of December in San Diego. My husband was gone briefly, so I had a chance to look around. The man next to me was sitting alone, enjoying a glass of champagne.
“That’s a good way to start the day — with a glass of bubbly,” I remarked.
I was being friendly, but I couldn’t imagine doing that myself, drinking champagne at 9:00 in the morning, especially alone. I admired his courage but briefly wondered if he was a “problem drinker,” however that’s defined.
Alcohol consumption is such a fraught topic. He was breaking a couple of generally agreed-upon rules: no drinking in the morning and no drinking alone.
According to who? Maybe he was just coming off-duty from working the night shift, and it was the end of his day.
In my self-determined moral code, if someone drinks more than I do, I wonder about it. If they drink less, they’re no fun.
Unless, of course, they’re alcoholics and had to stop. Or, like my husband, they can’t drink. He believes that he has an alcohol intolerance due to having a Vietnamese grandmother.
