Format Your Stories Like a Pro

A definitive guide to formatting your Medium stories with ease

If there’s one thing Medium editors want beyond a well-written and captivating story, it’s formatted work. While many Pubs have particular ways they’d like things formatted, this is a general guide to make your stories look polished and (most) publication editors happy.

Title — Subtitle — Kicker

Every story begins with an enticing title. There are a plethora of articles about what goes into a great title, so I won’t elaborate much. For my stories, I try to develop a title that will grab people’s attention and give them some idea about what they’ll read.

When I come across stories with titles that give me no idea of what the story is about, I won’t click them. Equally frustrating are titles or subtitles that give away all the details. I want to be both enticed and surprised.

As I’m sure you’ve heard, avoid clickbait titles or titles that draw us in but don’t deliver. One thing to remember is that readers have thousands of options on Medium. Don’t give them a reason to…
