A couple of months ago, a dear friend gifted me a pair of leopard print roller skates in the hope that watching me learn might encourage her to get back on her own skates. When they were delivered, my mom said, “Doesn’t she know you won’t do that?”

But for once, my mom was wrong. But I can hardly blame her — she was thinking of an earlier version of me.

That person I was, to be sure, would not deign to try something as foolish as taking up roller skating at the age of 50. I’m glad that version of me is not around anymore.

So…What’s Changed?

In a word? Everything.

I’ve written widely about my recovery experience, so I won’t go into it here.

For context, I’ll just say that in 2019, having barely survived decades of depression and undiagnosed autism, I had determined to end my life in the spring of 2020. It’s difficult to fully articulate, and I…
