After finding The Penny Pub during the Medium Pub Crawl, I followed the publication and read about the monthly writing prompts. I pondered this month’s question over a couple of days.

“What is one thing that you would never consider giving up and why?”

I recently became aware that I am a neurodivergent person. I’ve come to this knowledge late in life. My past and struggles make more sense to me now.

I never fit in or belonged anywhere. I felt like an outsider within my family, and my circle of friends was small, very small. It takes me a minute to trust others, and it sure takes others a minute or two to accept my unique and awkward self.

To counteract the overwhelming feeling of never belonging, questioning my worth, needing, and craving connection, I discovered strategies or coping mechanisms that made my life bearable and allowed me to bloom.

Animals, Books, and Gardening are the three consistent “things” I could never give up for several reasons I mention below.
