All that happened *today*

Republican members of the House intel committee voted to release a memo that is overwhelmingly partisan but full of sensitive information; the Department of Justice has said that the release would be “extraordinarily reckless.” The president pushed out a leader of the FBI; the special agent served with distinction for more than two decades under administrations from both parties. The Trump White House announced that it would not. enforce economic sanctions against Russia; those sanctions passed in Congress with healthy bipartisan margins.

All of that happened *today*. Little more than a year ago, any one of these actions would have caused an outcry among Republican politicians. Ignoring a DOJ recommendation? A threat to those serving in the field. A second decapitation strike against the FBI? A shameful act, disrespecting law enforcement. Refusing an act of Congress? Imperial presidency!

And those Republicans would have been right. But instead they’ve chosen a trade. They’ll make any moral compromise necessary. They won’t just ignore Trump’s behavior. They’ll fly cover and throw up chaff to support him indefinitely. In exchange, they’ll get tax cuts and an incensed base willing to believe and put up with anything.

Law enforcement, the intelligence community, and the separation of powers are being undermined, and they won’t immediately or naturally bounce back when this nihilistic scam eventually runs its course. They’re being overrun by people who prefer power to our system of government.

This isn’t graft. It isn’t politics. It’s selling out to interests who have no real interest in our safety or well being.

Call your Republican member of Congress and tell them you expect them to go on the record with their support for these ridiculous dangerous acts. They shouldn’t be allowed to sell out quietly.
