How Photography Found Me

When I was fourteen, I bought a small compact camera. It was nothing special at all, just the right size to fit in my pocket when I hiked with my Dad. I wanted to photograph the landscapes we walked.

I have never skimmed through photos unless they are of people I don’t know. I study photos. I look at the details. I notice patterns or features. I take in the colors. People don’t enjoy showing me their holiday photos. I never use the word snaps.

Soon after I got that camera, I would buy magazines about photography. That is how I learned the rule of thirds. I realized I was almost always following that rule. I also learned about depth of field and apertures, so I asked my Dad to take me to a camera shop with some of my savings. I bought a Canon SLR.

An SLR gave me a lot more creativity with my photos. I could “blur” the background like in the top photo here. I could make the middle distance sharper. I could adapt to different light, sunny, cloudy, moody, etc.
