The story one resident relayed to me about how cats came to rule the roost in and around the town of Kotor, Montenegro is that sometime in history, doesn’t matter exactly when, a merchant ship had docked in the bay. The captain of the ship happened to have a cat in his possession, but it was clear the cat was not being well taken care of — scruffy, skinny and just looking like it was clearly being abused.

The residents of the town rallied together and made it known to the ship captain that the cat would stay so that it could be taken care of properly. When the captain tried to object, he was chased back to his ship, expelled from the bay and told to never return again.

I enjoyed hearing this endearing and heroic story, although not at all certain if it is actually true as I’ve read various other origin stories online. According to Kotor’s Cats Museum website:

“Imaginative legends arose about the cats that saved Kotor from the plague and that fed the citizens during the sieges of the Turks but they are all fantasies that have no basis in truth.”

Wow, what a buzzkill! Indeed though, the furry creatures seem to have been hanging around this…
