Someone gave my friend Gina a block of guava paste as a present. An odd gift for anyone but particularly for someone who doesn’t bake and who isn’t Cuban. She called me and asked if I knew what to do with it. Of course, I did.

Here in Florida, Cuban guava cheese pastries are common bakery items. Even Publix, the largest grocery chain in Florida, always has them. I’ve eaten plenty but never made any.

Gina delivered her guava and I made my first guava cheese pastries, and I must say it was one of the easiest baking recipes I’ve tried. But, only because I didn’t try to make the puff pastry from scratch! I don’t know anyone who makes puff pastry from scratch — well, maybe, Martha Stewart but no real people. And, why would you when Pepperidge Farm makes it for you? Look in the dessert section of your local grocery’s frozen food section and you are sure to find Pepperidge Farm Puff Pastry Sheets — delicious and easy to use. But if you really want to be authentic, Google “Martha Stewart and puff pastry”.

Many of my baking recipes are gluten-free. This one is not. If I could find pre-made gluten-free puff pastries, I would definitely give them a try. Meanwhile, I’ll treat myself to these full-flour goodies.
