I Want to Be Lauren Graham When I Grow Up

Amy Sherman-Palladino, Lauren Graham, Alexis Bledel, and Kelly Bishop on stage for at the ATX TV Festival, 2015

For the 15th anniversary of the launch of Gilmore Girls, the creator and the actresses behind the three eponymous Gilmore girls appeared at the ATX TV Festival. You can watch the entire (nearly 2-hour!) interview here, and it’s a pure delight.

One anecdote from early on jumped out at me, and it’s stayed with me.

It’s from Lauren Graham, who played Lorelai, when she tells about how she got the role.

The nutshell version: another actress who had auditioned for the part asked for a ride, and as they were in the car, Lauren’s cell phone kept ringing. She didn’t dare answer — not due to driving safety, but in case it was a call about the part.

And she was right: She was being offered the part right then and there. She was glad she hadn’t answered and learned that she got it right in front of another actress who didn’t get the job, had no car, and would have been humiliated.

You can watch her story and ASP’s response to it starting here, from 11:10 to about 13:55:
