Using Gothic texts and Jungian psychology in my English lessons was a risk I was willing to take when I went online after the pandemic.

It wasn’t something I had clear to start with and it didn’t happen from one day to the next. It took some time to brew up and marinate in my head. But it was the right move and well-worth-it in the end.

What I came to realise after putting all my favourite ingredients together — English language teaching, the Gothic and Jungian psychology — and by mixing them all with love and passion, was that I had created a unique multipotential method.

The combination of language learning with deeper psychological and cultural insights, by making use of the Gothic genre in multiple artistic representations, offered my last year’s students a way to keep improving their level of English while exploring complex, thought-provoking themes in a fun and engaging way. Moreover, this method also opened new perspectives and helped them expand their critical thinking.
