We All Have a Little Frankenstein in Us
We all have a little curiosity about ourselves when it comes to the Gothic reality in which we live.
When I was in grade school, my English classes consisted of reading classic tales such as Rumble Fish, Of Mice and Men, and Frankenstein. I grew up watching horror movies and constantly being scared while watching Halloween, The Exorcist, and Children of the Corn. It was only fitting then, that I enjoyed Gothic literature that fit the horror genre.
Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein became one of my favorite books. I remember my English teacher giving us homework: reading one chapter a night. I finished the book within a week. I couldn’t put it down.
As the story goes, Victor Frankenstein was known as a scientist who experimented with chemistry, and alchemy and had a grandiose idea to create life. Victor knows not the trouble with playing God and creating life of such monstrosities. The life he creates becomes known as “The Creature.”
The Creature is discombobulated and completely new to the world after Victor’s experimental creation miraculously works. It kills. It destroys. It understands very little. It is up to Victor to go from the title of “God” to “Father.”
The Creature is ultimately shunned by the world surrounding it, and Victor is as well.
