Calling off the IBB
Philippians 4: 2-9
An interesting thing happened in the Phillies and Mets game the other day. With the game tied at 4 in the 9th, the Mets had runners at 2nd and 3rd with one out. The Mets hitter was rookie Eric Campbell, who had yet to record his first major league hit. The bench decided to walk him in favor of facing Wilmer Flores, who let’s just say was a prime double play candidate. One ball into the walk, though, second baseman Chase Utley called a mound conference. He noticed that veteran Bobby Abreu was prepping to pinch hit for Flores, and they decided instead to pitch to Campbell. It was a good decision; pitcher Mike Adams struck out Campbell. Adams then walked Flores (unintentionally), and when Abreu himself came to the plate a pinch hitter later, he grounded out to Adams to end the inning. The Phillies won it in the 9th off a Ryan Howard single to score Jimmy Rollins (stop me if you’ve heard that headline before). All that worry was all for naught; it turns out the best move for Adams was just to make his pitch and get the guy at the plate. Just stay focused, do what you can, and trust that it’ll all work out in the end.
Philippians 4: 4-7
Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Paul here tells the church at Philippi not to be anxious; it was good advice to Adams too. Being anxious about a groundball scoring a run would have lead him to intentionally walk Campbell, but he refrained, and just took the batters as they came to the plate. It was good advice for him, and it’s good advice for us. Take life one day at a time. Don’t let concerns which haven’t arrived yet take a toll on your mental and emotional well being. Your happiness has been secured by Jesus sacrifice; don’t give it away to causes which don’t merit it. Take the problems you’ve got which threaten to weigh down on you and give them up to God in prayer and thanks. Treat your trials as just that, and thank God for the work he’s doing in your spirit through them. Pray for solution from God for these problems, and give him the credit when one is provided. If you stay focused on God, there won’t be any room for worry, and that’s just how Jesus wants it. Do so today.
